Our Vineyard

A historic vineyard in the hills above Chambéry
The south-facing vineyard of Château de Candie stretches majestically across the sunny slopes overlooking the Chambéry valley. It benefits from clay-limestone soil that is particularly favourable for growing vines. This privileged terroir, combined with a mild and regular microclimate, gives the wine a strong and unique identity. The estate’s wine-growing history dates back to the 14th century, when the noble Candie family already cultivated these fertile lands with passion and expertise.
However, this flourishing activity was brutally interrupted in 1879 by the phylloxera plague, a devastating insect that destroyed all the vines. Despite an attempt to replant two years later, the vineyard gradually fell into oblivion and remained abandoned for over a century. It was not until 2003 that the owners at the time, driven by a desire to revive this historical heritage, decided to bring the château’s vines back to life. Their ambition was to produce a quality wine, rooted in Savoyard tradition but with an eye to the future.
In 2009, the Perrier family initiated a concrete revival of the vineyard by replanting a 90-acre plot with the Viognier grape variety. This noble white grape variety, native to the Alps, is known for its powerful aromas and rich bouquet. It is also closely related to Mondeuse Blanche, an ancient grape variety emblematic of Savoie.
A confidential cuvée with Savoyard aromas
Today, Château de Candie produces around 3,000 bottles of an elegant and refined dry white wine each year, under the appellation ‘Candie 1891’. This confidential cuvée seduces with its pale, crystalline golden colour, reminiscent of dewdrops in the early morning. On the nose, the wine opens with notes typical of Viognier: juicy peach, ripe exotic fruits and a subtle floral touch of violet. On the palate, the attack is lively, the mid-palate reveals a creamy texture, and the long, balanced finish leaves a salty impression evoking the mineral richness of the soil.
